The European Commission has outlined a range of transport measures that member states could deploy for rapid impact, including encouraging teleworking and limiting air travel, according to a leaked document seen by the Green Mobility Magazine.
The document does not propose EU-level legislation, but instead presents a non-exhaustive menu of “types of measures for immediate relief”, setting out what member states could do and which tools they could use to curb transport emissions in the short term.
Among the options identified are behavioural measures aimed at reducing travel demand. These include encouraging businesses to ensure at least one day of teleworking per week where possible, as well as mandating companies to avoid air travel for work whenever feasible. The document also suggests minimising air travel by public sector employees.
