T&E Calls on Sustainable Transport Commissioner to Prioritise E-Fuels for Aviation & Maritime

The influential environmental organisation Transport & Environment (T&E) has issued an appeal to the newly appointed EU Sustainable Transport Commissioner, Mr Tzitzikostas, outlining a robust agenda to tackle the transport sector’s significant contribution to climate change. In a fictitious mission letter, T&E underscored the urgent need for transformative policies to decarbonise and modernise Europe’s transport system.

T&E emphasised the stark reality that transport is the EU’s largest source of climate pollution and the only sector where emissions have risen since 1990. With Europe importing 97.7% of its oil at an annual cost of €300 billion, the group stressed the imperative for swift and decisive action.

The letter urged Mr Tzitzikostas to prioritise several key objectives, including:

  • Cutting transport CO2 emissions and oil demand by 31% by 2030.
  • Increasing the share of road electrification from 0.3% today to 8% by 2030.
  • Boosting the share of e-fuels in shipping and aviation from 0% to 2% by 2030.
