Airbus and TotalEnergies Forge Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)

In a bid to tackle the pressing issue of decarbonising aviation, Airbus and TotalEnergies have recently announced a strategic partnership centred on the development and supply of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This alliance is a proactive response to the industry’s imperative to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve net carbon neutrality in aviation by 2050.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) have emerged as a pivotal element in the quest for carbon reduction, with TotalEnergies’ SAF capable of slashing up to 90% of CO2 emissions throughout their lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels.

The collaboration between Airbus and TotalEnergies encompasses two primary facets. Firstly, TotalEnergies will supply sustainable aviation fuels to meet more than half of Airbus’ requirements in Europe. Concurrently, a joint research and innovation program will be undertaken to develop 100% sustainable fuels tailored to the specific design parameters of current and future aircraft. This program will also assess the impact of sustainable aviation fuels on CO2 emissions reduction and non-CO2 effects, such as contrails.

Notably, TotalEnergies has been supplying SAF for Airbus aircraft deliveries in Toulouse since 2016. Moreover, the company has provided the fuel for several milestone flights, including the 1st long-haul flight using French-produced SAF with an A350, the inaugural flight of a H225 helicopter using 100% SAF, and the first A321neo flight powered entirely by SAF.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainable aviation fuels as a core element of its transition strategy. TotalEnergies has set an ambitious target of producing 1.5 million tons of SAF annually by 2030, pointing to a substantial contribution to the industry’s decarbonisation efforts.

Echoing this sentiment, Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, emphasised the pivotal role of accelerating sustainable aviation fuel deployment in meeting carbon emissions reduction targets by 2030. The partnership between Airbus and TotalEnergies underscores the collective dedication of aerospace manufacturers and major energy producers to confront the challenge of aviation decarbonisation.

As the aviation industry continues to grapple with environmental imperatives, the collaboration between Airbus and TotalEnergies signifies a concerted effort to drive sustainable innovation and address the pressing need for carbon reduction in aviation.
