Topsoe and Sasol Launch Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Joint Venture; Zaffra

In a collaborative effort to mitigate the aviation sector’s carbon footprint, Sasol and Topsoe have inaugurated Zaffra, a joint venture dedicated to the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The enterprise, whose operations will be based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is anticipated to become a pivotal entity in aviation sustainability.

Zaffra’s establishment is a response to the urgent call for decarbonisation within the aviation industry. The company aims to leverage the expertise of both Sasol, with its substantial background in infrastructure development, operations, and technology, and Topsoe, renowned for its carbon emission reduction technologies. This synergy is expected to advance the production of SAF, an essential component in the transition towards greener aviation practices.

The venture’s CEO, Jan Toschka, will steer Zaffra through this critical juncture in the industry’s evolution. Toschka, recognizing the burgeoning demand for SAF, is confident in the company’s capacity to cater to diverse market needs. “Zaffra is poised to become a significant contributor to the SAF market,” Toschka stated. He emphasised the need for agility, innovation, and collaboration with various stakeholders to achieve scalable growth.

The launch of Zaffra signifies a commitment to the global endeavour to address climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative is particularly salient as the aviation industry accounts for approximately 2-3% of global carbon emissions.

Sasol’s President and CEO, Fleetwood Grobler, expressed enthusiasm regarding the venture. “Zaffra epitomises Sasol’s ambition in the SAF sector, building on our longstanding partnership with Topsoe,” Grobler noted. This sentiment was echoed by Roeland Baan, CEO of Topsoe, who remarked on the importance of this milestone in creating value for the aviation industry and society at large by providing alternative fuel solutions that can significantly curtail emissions.

The strategic location of Zaffra’s headquarters in Amsterdam positions the venture to tap into a pivotal market and regulatory landscape that supports sustainability initiatives. With the European Union’s commitment to the European Green Deal and the global aviation sector’s pledge to achieve carbon-neutral growth, Zaffra’s role becomes increasingly vital.
